Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .photography zone?

Yes. Download a sample .photography domain list or a sample .photography dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 38,415 registered domain names in the .photography zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds DNS servers, server IP, hostname, emails, phone numbers, and more. See the dataset format details.

What are active and new domains?

Datasets for .photography are updated daily. Active domains are all currently registered names in the zone. New domains are names added in the last 24 hours.

Can I download only newly registered .photography domains?

Yes. The New domains list contains only the .photography domains registered in the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. To download it manually, sign in and click the number in the New domains column of the download table on this page (the Download button next to it gets the full list of active domains). Through the API, call /api2/?method=download&zone_tld=photography&dataset_type=list&filter_type=new&token=YOUR_API_TOKEN (dataset_type=dataset for the detailed dataset); see the API documentation.

Can I download deleted .photography domains?

Yes. The Deleted domains list contains the .photography domains that were in the zone the day before and have dropped out of it, so it covers the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. Deleted domains are available as a list of domain names only, there is no detailed dataset for them.

A deleted domain is not necessarily free to register. The list records names that have dropped out of the .photography zone: the registration expired, or the domain was suspended or undelegated. After the expiration date a domain normally goes through a renewal grace period and a redemption period, typically 30 to 75 days depending on the zone, during which the current holder can still restore it, and only after a short pending-delete period is it released for registration. Some names return to the zone when the holder renews or a suspension is lifted, and then appear in the New domains list again.

What format and size is the file?

Every .photography domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .photography basic list is about 188 KB and the detailed dataset about 1.1 MB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

The .photography domain is a generic top-level domain delegated on November 19, 2013 and officially launched in February 2014 by Donuts, now Identity Digital. It was intended for professionals, businesses and service providers in the photography industry, from individual photographers to studios and equipment brands.

For service providers the descriptive extension brings visitors to the right site and supports trust, credibility and brand recognition, since the address states the profession clearly.

.photography was one of the more popular new extensions in its first years and remains a common choice for portfolios and studio sites. Registration is open to anyone without restrictions.
