Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .org zone?

Yes. Download a sample .org domain list or a sample .org dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 13,850,103 registered domain names in the .org zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds DNS servers, server IP, hostname, emails, phone numbers, and more. See the dataset format details.

What are active and new domains?

Datasets for .org are updated daily. Active domains are all currently registered names in the zone. New domains are names added in the last 24 hours.

Can I download only newly registered .org domains?

Yes. The New domains list contains only the .org domains registered in the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. To download it manually, sign in and click the number in the New domains column of the download table on this page (the Download button next to it gets the full list of active domains). Through the API, call /api2/?method=download&zone_tld=org&dataset_type=list&filter_type=new&token=YOUR_API_TOKEN (dataset_type=dataset for the detailed dataset); see the API documentation.

What format and size is the file?

Every .org domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .org basic list is about 68 MB and the detailed dataset about 257 MB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

The .org top-level domain, created in 1985, is derived from the word organization, which is mostly used for charitable and non-profit websites such as educational projects and NGOs. The unique purpose of the .org domain, to serve non-profit organizations, sets it apart from other domains like .com and .net. In August 2019, the ownership to manage the domain was purchased by an investment firm, and the restriction on the .org domain being exclusively non-profitable was lifted.

The Public Interest Registry (PIR) has been operating .org since its beginning. Today, big names like Wikipedia, WordPress, and several nonprofit organizations such as UNICEF are among the 10 million users of the .org domain.  The .org domain has become one of the most trusted online hubs, helping non-profit organizations and communities connect with their audience and share their purpose.
