Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .com zone?

Yes. Download a sample .com domain list or a sample .com dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 192,456,893 registered domain names in the .com zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds DNS servers, server IP, hostname, emails, phone numbers, and more. See the dataset format details.

What are active and new domains?

Datasets for .com are updated daily. Active domains are all currently registered names in the zone. New domains are names added in the last 24 hours.

Can I download only newly registered .com domains?

Yes. The New domains list contains only the .com domains registered in the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. To download it manually, sign in and click the number in the New domains column of the download table on this page (the Download button next to it gets the full list of active domains). Through the API, call /api2/?method=download&zone_tld=com&dataset_type=list&filter_type=new&token=YOUR_API_TOKEN (dataset_type=dataset for the detailed dataset); see the API documentation.

What format and size is the file?

Every .com domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .com basic list is about 883 MB and the detailed dataset about 3.4 GB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

The ".com" domains, one of the most popular and widely used top-level domains (TLD), was founded by the Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA) at the beginning of 1985 along with other TLDs, such as .org, .net, .edu, and .gov. The ".com" zone is intended to be operated commercially. However, it has been developed as the generic TLD – the most universal domain used by any individual, government, or organization worldwide.

With an outstanding 150 million registered domains, ".com" conquers the Internet as the largest and most used TLD, making up 40% of all registered domains worldwide. Originally, the domain was administered by the U.S. Department of Defense. Currently, the U.S.-based company Verisign has been managing “.com” operations and maintenance since 1993. It is still governed by U.S. law.

The history of “.com” is rooted in a time when big brands like Sun Microsystems and IBM used it to first establish their online presence. Now, ".com" is a vital part of the Internet, and the TLD experiences rapid growth with thousands of new websites using it every day.
