Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .net zone?

Yes. Download a sample .net domain list or a sample .net dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 14,305,239 registered domain names in the .net zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds DNS servers, server IP, hostname, emails, phone numbers, and more. See the dataset format details.

What are active and new domains?

Datasets for .net are updated daily. Active domains are all currently registered names in the zone. New domains are names added in the last 24 hours.

Can I download only newly registered .net domains?

Yes. The New domains list contains only the .net domains registered in the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. To download it manually, sign in and click the number in the New domains column of the download table on this page (the Download button next to it gets the full list of active domains). Through the API, call /api2/?method=download&zone_tld=net&dataset_type=list&filter_type=new&token=YOUR_API_TOKEN (dataset_type=dataset for the detailed dataset); see the API documentation.

What format and size is the file?

Every .net domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .net basic list is about 64 MB and the detailed dataset about 256 MB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

The .net is another most recognized top-level domain (TLD) which was created by Jon Postel at the University of Southern California’s Information Science Institute (USCISI) in 1984. .Net domain was derived from the word network, it was formerly used for network infrastructure organization such as network operators and internet service providers. The first .net domain was registered in 1985 under the name www.nordu.net by the Nordic Infrastructure for Research and Education.

This domain had a very slow start with only 10 registrations in its first year. By the late 1980s, .net started its popularity and reached over 1000 registrations. Later in the 1990s, while the internet witnessed a surge in growth, .net quickly earned 100,000 registrations. That was the time when in 2000, Verisign took .net management rights and helped the domain to expand its further reach.

Among millions of domain name registrations, .net has strengthened its position as the fifth largest domain with over 13 million registrations on its credit. .Net helps businesses worldwide to introduce their brands online.
