What format and size is the file?

Every .il domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .il basic list is about 587 KB and the detailed dataset about 1.8 MB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

Managed by the Internet Association of Israel, the .il domain is a country code top-level domain (ccTCD) for Israel. The .il was launched 38 years ago on 24 October 1985, making it one of the first and oldest ccTLDs (ranking just after .us and .uk). The domain is associated mainly with business entities, organizations, and individuals within and linked to Israel. As of 2023, a total of over 285,000 domains have been registered with the .il domain extension.

The Internet Association of Israel manages the domain extension quite meticulously, leaving nothing to chance, meaning the probability of a name dispute does not exist. Moreover, .il is most suited for brands and businesses aiming to target specifically an Israeli audience. Although anyone can buy the .il domain name, the eligibility is governed by a local contract in Israel.
