Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .global zone?

Yes. Download a sample .global domain list or a sample .global dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 87,200 registered domain names in the .global zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds DNS servers, server IP, hostname, emails, phone numbers, and more. See the dataset format details.

What are active and new domains?

Datasets for .global are updated daily. Active domains are all currently registered names in the zone. New domains are names added in the last 24 hours.

Can I download only newly registered .global domains?

Yes. The New domains list contains only the .global domains registered in the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. To download it manually, sign in and click the number in the New domains column of the download table on this page (the Download button next to it gets the full list of active domains). Through the API, call /api2/?method=download&zone_tld=global&dataset_type=list&filter_type=new&token=YOUR_API_TOKEN (dataset_type=dataset for the detailed dataset); see the API documentation.

What format and size is the file?

Every .global domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .global basic list is about 410 KB and the detailed dataset about 1.5 MB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

As part of the ICANN's 2014 expansion of the internet namespace, the .global domain extension was launched as a top-level domain that reflects international scope, and borderless presence. As it has no geographical restrictions, anybody from anywhere in the world can easily use this domain thatโ€™s why it is appealing to large multinational businesses and charitable organizations.

The .global domain's application was accepted on April 17, 2014, and on September 9, 2014, after 5 months of its inception, it became available to the public. The process from application to launch was complex because of the word ""global"". The name collision issues caused the .global registry to temporarily stop 60,000 domain names from registration until the issues were completely resolved.

Despite the problem of name collision conflict, it has become more and more popular as well-known brands like Ernst & Young, BMW, and BNP Paribas have secured their .global domains.
