Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .gb zone?

Yes. Download a sample .gb domain list or a sample .gb dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 1 registered domain names in the .gb zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds the nameservers, the server IP and its country, the hostname, emails and phone numbers found on the website, and, where the registry publishes them, the registration and expiration dates and the registrar. The full list of columns is in the dataset format details.

How often are .gb datasets updated?

The .gb zone is a country-code (ccTLD) zone, and its registry zone file is not directly accessible. NetAPI discovers .gb domains through large-scale crawls: newly discovered domains are added to the list daily, and the full dataset is rebuilt every one to two months. See how updates work.

Can I download only newly registered .gb domains?

Not for this zone. Newly discovered .gb domains are merged into the active list daily, but there is no separate new-domains file for .gb. Daily new-domains lists exist for the zones marked as updated daily in the datasets catalog.

What format and size is the file?

Every .gb domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz). The basic list has one domain name per line. The detailed dataset has one row per domain with the additional data listed in the dataset format details. The current .gb files are about 1 KB (basic list) and 1 KB (detailed dataset) compressed. Any archiver opens gzip files; on Windows, for example, the free 7-Zip. Through the API you can also download the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

Additional .GB Zone / Registry Information

Zone Registry: IANA (reserved)

The .gb domain is the ISO 3166 country-code top-level domain for the United Kingdom (Great Britain). It was created in 1985 alongside the other early country codes, but the UK Internet community had already standardised on .uk, which had been assigned earlier at the request of the JANET academic network, and .gb was never opened to general registration.

A handful of .gb names were used in the 1990s by UK government and defence networks, but they were later removed and the domain has been dormant ever since. Today .gb is kept in the root zone as a reserved domain managed by IANA; no registrations are possible and all British organisations use .uk. The domain is included here only as an officially reserved country-code TLD.
