Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .chat zone?

Yes. Download a sample .chat domain list or a sample .chat dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 72,154 registered domain names in the .chat zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds DNS servers, server IP, hostname, emails, phone numbers, and more. See the dataset format details.

What are active and new domains?

Datasets for .chat are updated daily. Active domains are all currently registered names in the zone. New domains are names added in the last 24 hours.

Can I download only newly registered .chat domains?

Yes. The New domains list contains only the .chat domains registered in the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. To download it manually, sign in and click the number in the New domains column of the download table on this page (the Download button next to it gets the full list of active domains). Through the API, call /api2/?method=download&zone_tld=chat&dataset_type=list&filter_type=new&token=YOUR_API_TOKEN (dataset_type=dataset for the detailed dataset); see the API documentation.

What format and size is the file?

Every .chat domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .chat basic list is about 303 KB and the detailed dataset about 1.1 MB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

A top-level domain specifically created for online chat rooms, messaging apps, and social networking applications is named the .chat domain. It offers a dedicated space for real-time communication and interaction.

As part of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers's goal to increase the number of TLDs that are available, Donuts launched the .chat domain in 2014. The Public Interest Registry (PIR) is in charge of managing this domain. The objective of this launch was to provide an exclusive namespace for the online messaging and chat providing services to a more regulated and relevant online community.

Shortly after the .chat domain went live, people started registering it. Websites for chat rooms, messaging services, live chat support, chatbots for customer service, online discussion boards, and social media platforms all adopted this domain. Many companies recognized the perks of having a unique top-level domain that would voice their concerns and provide online communication and immediate interaction.
