Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .berlin zone?

Yes. Download a sample .berlin domain list or a sample .berlin dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 46,419 registered domain names in the .berlin zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds DNS servers, server IP, hostname, emails, phone numbers, and more. See the dataset format details.

What are active and new domains?

Datasets for .berlin are updated daily. Active domains are all currently registered names in the zone. New domains are names added in the last 24 hours.

Can I download only newly registered .berlin domains?

Yes. The New domains list contains only the .berlin domains registered in the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. To download it manually, sign in and click the number in the New domains column of the download table on this page (the Download button next to it gets the full list of active domains). Through the API, call /api2/?method=download&zone_tld=berlin&dataset_type=list&filter_type=new&token=YOUR_API_TOKEN (dataset_type=dataset for the detailed dataset); see the API documentation.

What format and size is the file?

Every .berlin domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .berlin basic list is about 220 KB and the detailed dataset about 938 KB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

Berlin, Germany's capital city is defined by the community-sponsored top-level domain .berlin. To establish a distinctive online identity and to show their connection with the city, people, companies, and organizations use this domain. Although the .berlin was initially proposed in 2005, it became active in March 2014. This domain extension is controlled by DotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG, whose managing director is Dirk Krischenowski.

This domain is one of the first city-specific extensions to become available as part of the ICANN's new gTLD program. As a domain extension, the .berlin was introduced for individuals as well as businesses having their association in Berlin.

Today, many different kinds of people and businesses use the .berlin. Within the last few years, nearly 31,000 domains were registered under the .berlin domain extension. As an example of the trend toward geo-targeted domain extensions, it has been recognized for assisting in the development of Berlin's unique digital identity.
