Frequently Asked Questions

See our FAQ for more answers.

Can I download sample datasets for the .earth zone?

Yes. Download a sample .earth domain list or a sample .earth dataset.

What is a basic domain list, and how does it differ from a detailed dataset?

Both cover the same 41,064 registered domain names in the .earth zone. A basic list is one domain name per line in a gzip CSV. A detailed dataset adds DNS servers, server IP, hostname, emails, phone numbers, and more. See the dataset format details.

What are active and new domains?

Datasets for .earth are updated daily. Active domains are all currently registered names in the zone. New domains are names added in the last 24 hours.

Can I download only newly registered .earth domains?

Yes. The New domains list contains only the .earth domains registered in the last 24 hours and is rebuilt every day. To download it manually, sign in and click the number in the New domains column of the download table on this page (the Download button next to it gets the full list of active domains). Through the API, call /api2/?method=download&zone_tld=earth&dataset_type=list&filter_type=new&token=YOUR_API_TOKEN (dataset_type=dataset for the detailed dataset); see the API documentation.

What format and size is the file?

Every .earth domain list and dataset is a CSV file compressed with gzip (.csv.gz): the basic list has one domain name per line, the detailed dataset has one row per domain with the columns described in the dataset format details. Compressed, the current .earth basic list is about 168 KB and the detailed dataset about 644 KB. Any archiver opens gzip files, for example the free 7-Zip on Windows, and the API can also serve the files uncompressed (format=plain).

How do I automate daily downloads?

Schedule automatic downloads through the API. See the API documentation for authentication and endpoints.

Are emails and phone numbers available for every domain?

No. We collect contact details from public websites when available. Many domains have no published email or phone, and we do not guarantee these fields on every row. Do not use the data for unsolicited bulk outreach.

The .earth is a generic top-level domain launched 9 years ago on May 12, 2015, by Interlink Co., Ltd. It was created as a unique name for businesses, organizations, and individuals who put efforts into an industry relevant to the environment. Unlike general TLDs, it was intended for the businesses involved in managing geographical issues or providing information.

Because it is a generic domain, .earth is available to any organization around the world that engages a community on ecological interests. With time, it has also been used by blog owners and firms to provide content or discuss issues about the environment. Today, geospatial technology providers are using it to emphasize their brand identity in this industry.

In 2017, Amazon Web Services used this domain for their public geographic data initiative, representing its worth among users. The trend had grown to 26000 registered domains by 2021 and reached a 38000 figure until today.
