The .ae domain is one of the top-level domains (TLD) for the United Arab Emirates. It was introduced on 1st December 1992. It was assisted by .aeDA and financed by the (TDRA) Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority of UAE. Initially used for commercial purposes, it later became popular for general use.

The .aeDA took over the DNS on 3rd August 2008 and established their services with the new registry system. It supports the registry-registrar model. Currently, the .aeDA has licensed eight registrars globally.

Internet users in the UAE are now able to register and control their domain names under .ae automatically. As per .aeDA policies, current domain holders can transfer between registrars at no cost. Anyone can use this domain extension from any part of the world. But to purchase it one has to have a legitimate business activity in the UAE.
