As part of the new geographic top-level domain (gTLD) initiative, which aims to promote local online identities, the .wien domain is easily accessible. On October 28, 2013, ICANN approved it, and on February 11, 2014, second-level domain registration was launched to the public.
The Viennese Volksoper was among the first to finish the .wien domain registration procedure.
